Wedges Mills FC etc

I first met Tony in 1969 when I started playing for Wedges Mills FC. At that time he was the secretary, treasurer, groundsman, permanent linesman, in short doing every job to keep the team going that no one else wanted to do. Our friendship grew over the years nurtured by our mutual devotion to and fanaticism for the Wolves. I can remember travelling to several away matches in either of our cars sometimes accompanied by my wife and children who would shop in the town centre while Tony and I would go to the match. He was also responsible for organising coach trips from Bowmakers (Finnings) from the Mills to Wembley for the two league cup finals in 1974 and 80. Later as he became less able to drive and walk to the home games, I used to drop him as close to Molineux as possible, go and park the car, watch the game and leave a bit early to pick him up again. The only games he missed were through illness and latterly night or poor weather matches which affected him badly and also those on Sky since our promotion to the Premier. Even for those games missed he still insisted on paying for a car parking pass for me. On our journeys to and from the games we would talk endlessly about our shared interest in history and in particular of the Mills and his memories of living there and its people. Even up to three weeks ago we were  planning that when he felt better how we could fit his mobility scooter into my small car and how he could bully the Wolves ticket manager into giving him the best viewing space, sadly that will not happen. For me it has been a privilege to have known Tony he was  generous and in all the years I have known him I cannot recall any bad words from him about anyone, he was a genuinely nice man. RIP Tony
