A brief biography of Tony

Tony was born in Wedges Mills on 15th February 1941 and died in the Royal Stoke University Hospital on 22nd January 2019.

He attended the Croft School on High Green in Cannock from 1945 to 1947, followed by Walhouse Church of England School between 1948 and 1953, and then Bridgtown Secondary Modern School between 1953 and 1956.

After leaving school he worked as a Laboratory Assistant at the Midland and Yorkshire Tar Distillers, Four Ashes until 1958.  He then joined Staffordshire Police, initially as a Cadet between 1958 and 1960 first n Wednesbury (1958) and then in Cannock (1958-1960).  He served in the regular force between 1960 and 1970 working at the Stafford Borough Bath Street station between 1960 and 1963, and then in the Chief Constable’s Office, Weeping Cross between 1963 and 1970 in Communications (Control Room for the County), acting as Duty Officer between 1964 and 1970. After resigning from the police force he was then employed as a clerk at Bowmaker (later Finning) Ltd on the Watling Street in Cannock until 1998 when he took early retirement and voluntary redundancy.

He served as a Staffordshire Magistrate sitting at courts in Cannock, Wombourne and Stafford, and worked with a judge to assess appeals from the Magistrate’s Court at Stafford Crown Court.  He served as Adult Court Chairman and Youth Court Chairman until 2001.

From 1997-2001, he was appointed by the Home Secretary as a member of the Board of Visitors at Brinsford Young Offenders Institution, and served as Training Officer until he resigned in 2001.

Tony lived most of his life in Wedges Mills (except 1960-1970 when he lived in Stafford).  In 2006 he moved to New Hall Gardens in Cannock, and then in 2014 he moved to Chasewood on Longford Road, also in Cannock.
